Make your own biodiesel
Biodiesel is a cheap, easy-to-make, renewable energy source that can be used in any diesel vehicle, and here’s the interesting part: you can make your own biodiesel at home! You generally won’t have to modify your vehicle to run it on biodiesel, it lubricates your engine better than ordinary diesel and produces far fewer emissions. Once you are set up, you can make as many liters of your own biodiesel as you like, for a fraction of what you are paying at the gas or petrol station.
Biodiesel is made by converting organic matter (such as vegetable oil, soybeans, algae or canola oil) into fuel for your tractor, truck, ute or diesel car. You can also use it in boats, heaters and home generators. Home made biodiesel is a fantastic alternative energy source, because it is cheap, renewable and relatively clean (it is nearly carbon neutral). We currently depend upon fossil fuels and burn carbon emissions in our every day vehicles. If you make your own biodiesel, you will help your car to run cleaner, smoother and protect your engine from wear and tear, as well as contributing almost zero emissions to global warming. Converting to homemade electricity and homemade fuels is the way of the future if we plan to preserve out environment and help our own economy.

One of my favourite sources of oil comes from fish and chip shops, fast food restaurants, and any other food service industries that use lots of cooking oil. Most restaurants throw out large amounts of cooking oil every week, and as more and more people make their own biodiesel, more of this waste oil is being recycled, rather than having to be disposed of. It’s a win/win situation, and your exhaust emissions will smell like popcorn or chips, not diesel!
Many countries around the world are starting to look to renewable energy sources. Brazil is currently the world’s largest producer of ethanols derived from sugars. The country produces roughly three and a half billion gallons of ethanol a year.
The USA is the second behind Brazil, in terms of biofuel production, though it still holds the honour of being the world’s largest oil consumer, so one would hope they would try and counter this somehow. Europe’s biodiesel production is currently in excess of four million (British) tonnes. 80% of the European Union’s biodiesel fuels are derived from rapeseed oil, with the other 20% comprising of soybean oil and (unfortunately) palm oil.
Biodiesel can be blended with regular diesel or you can run your equipment/vehicles on 100% biodiesel. The amount of blending doesn’t really matter, so if you are driving around and caught short without biodiesel, you can stop off and fill up with regular diesel and not worry about the two mixing in your tank.
The popularity of Biodiesel continues to grow every year. More and more people are switching on to the fact that renewable energy sources and DIY energies will have to replace our current, destructive fossil fuel energies if we are to survive and prosper. Every week we hear more about global warming, oil prices and shortages. If we are to make a difference, DIY energies are a great start.
