Just what exactly is bio diesel fuel?

free-apologyA lot of people don’t know that bio diesel fuel even exists, and if they have heard of it, they still don’t know what it is exactly, so keep reading and hopefully this article will help to shine a light on this amazing, and underused, renewable energy.

Biodiesel is a non-petroleum-based fuel for diesel engines made from renewable organic materials instead of fossil hydrocarbons. Biodiesel is usually made from plant oils, but can be used, believe it or not, in a conventional diesel engine. Bio diesel fuel can be used on its own, or blended with conventional diesel.

Here are a few simple facts about bio diesel fuel to get you started:

* bio diesel fuel reduces carbon monoxide emissions
* bio diesel fuel reduces carbon dioxide
* bio diesel fuel reduces sulfur dioxide
* bio diesel fuel reduces hydrocarbons
* bio diesel fuel reduces benzene
* bio diesel fuel eliminates visible smoke output
* bio diesel fuel exhaust smells like French fries or popcorn, NOT yucky diesel
* bio diesel fuel lubricates your engine better than regular diesel fuel.

What are the benefits of bio diesel fuel?

1) Making your own bio diesel fuel reduces dependence on foreign oil.

2) Using bio diesel keeps costs down and money in the local economy.

3) Bio diesel fuel is renewable & non-toxic. People have even been known to drink bio diesel, though it tastes disgusting, so we wouldn’t recommend it.

4) Bio diesel fuel is almost carbon-neutral, and contributes close to zero emissions to global warming! Bio diesel fuel also dramatically reduces other emissions (see the list above), especially when you compare it to traditional diesel, which means we can all breathe clean air.

5) Bio diesel fuel reduces engine wear because it lubricates the engine and protects it. Even blending as little 2% biodiesel in with your ordinary diesel will help. It also cleans your injectors and fuel lines.

6) Running your vehicle on bio diesel fuel with result in smoother driving and a quieter ride. It also produces less smoke.

What are the downsides of using bio diesel fuel?

1) Bio diesel fuel is not all that readily available. If you want to use it, you’ll probably have to make it yourself.

2) Because bio diesel fuel cleans the injectors and fuel lines, your first few tanks of bio diesel in your old car will probably stir up a lot of gunk. Think of it as spring cleaning your engine. The first proper house clean of the year usually stirs up some dust after all. If your vehicle is older than about 15 years, you might have to upgrade your old fuel lines. Pretty much all new vehicles should have no issues with bio diesel fuel.

5) Whilst bio diesel fuel doesn’t produce toxic emissions, it does produce NOx and NOx contributes to smog.
