How does a power turbine use wind energy?
Wind power uses the process of converting wind into electricity by using wind turbines. The average wind turbine comprises 3 propeller-like blades, similar to a small airplane, called a rotor. This rotor is attached to a pole, or tower, which places it up in the path of the wind. It is often necessary to place it quite high up because wind is stronger once you get higher off the ground.
There are several different types of wind turbine, including horizontal and vertical axis wind turbines. Both types can be used for residential purposes.

The way a wind turbine captures the power of the wind to produce energy is this: the wind blows, and makes the rotor, or propellors spin. As the rotor spins, this turns a shaft and this spinning sends power to a generator. This generator then converts this power into electricity.
It does this by using magnets moving past stationary coils of wire. These coils of wire are known as the stator. As these magnets pass by the stator, it produces AC electricity. This AC (or alternating current) is then converted into DC (or direct current) electricity which is the type of electricity used by domestic homes. This DC electricity can then be used to charge batteries in order to store the electrical energy. It can also be used to feed power into the electricity grid, which could earn you a rebate from the Government, because you’re supplying power to them! Amazing.
Wind power is a popular DIY energy because it is a clean energy source that is renewable. Unless you move to a different location, you’re not likely to run out of wind anytime soon. A wind power turbine creates sustainable, affordable, pollution free energy for your home.
Do you want to know how to build your own wind power turbine?
The good news is, one wind power turbine is usually sufficient for the average domestic home. Because wind power is a renewable energy source, it makes a great alternative to burning fossil fuels, without producing greenhouse gases, emissions or waste of any kind.
